What's the best way to interpret auras for a beginner?

I've been trying to see auras, but so far I've only managed to see a very faint, almost white glow around people. I know there are different colors and meanings. For those of you who read auras, what's a good way to start? Are there specific exercises that help you see the colors, and not just the outline?

Great Question: A quick guide—best ways to see auras

1) 2-minute warm-up (anywhere)
  • Rub hands briskly for 10–15s, then hold them 2–3cm apart.
  • Soften your gaze through the gap (don’t stare at the skin).
  • Breathe slowly; you may notice a faint haze/film between the hands—that’s your first “energy edge.”

2) Hand aura drill (white wall)
  • Have someone stand by a plain, light background (white/cream wall, soft daylight).
  • Spread fingers slightly; look past your fingers, not at them.
  • Keep a relaxed, unfocused gaze for ~30–60s.
You’ll often see a thin, light outline that can grow thicker or tinted.

3) Partner/plant practice
  • Place a person or leafy plant 1–2ft before a plain wall.
  • Gaze at the space around their shoulders/head (not the face/leaves).
  • Keep blinking normally; let edges “glow.” Plants are great because they don’t move and won’t get self-conscious.

4) Mirror method (self-scan)
  • Soft, even light; stand 2–3ft from a mirror.
  • Look past your shoulder outline, not into your eyes.
  • Stay relaxed; note any light banding, shimmer, or color wash.

5) Lighting & posture tips
  • Best: soft, even light (window light, cloudy day), low visual clutter.
  • Avoid harsh overheads or strong color casts.
  • Keep shoulders relaxed; slow nasal breathing keeps the gaze soft.

6) What you’re likely to see first
  • A clear/whitish halo 0.5–2cm from the body, then gentle tints (pastels) with practice.
  • Don’t chase colors—train the edge/halo first; colors come with time.

7) Color notes (take with a pinch of intuition)
  • Red: vitality/drive
  • Orange: creativity/flow
  • Yellow: focus/joy
  • Green: compassion/healing
  • Blue: truth/communication
  • Indigo: intuition
  • Violet: spiritual insight
(Colors vary by person and moment—always check in with how you feel, not just what you “see.”)

8) Avoid common pitfalls
  • After-images ≠ auras. If you stare hard at a colored shirt, then look away, you’ll see the opposite color briefly—that’s retinal fatigue. Keep your gaze soft and allow micro-blinks.
  • Fatigue, dehydration, and screen strain reduce sensitivity. Drink water, rest your eyes.

9) 7-day practice plan (5 minutes/day)
  • Days 1–2: Hand aura (white wall).
  • Days 3–4: Plant aura (same spot, same time).
  • Days 5–6: Partner outline (shoulders/head).
  • Day 7: Mirror check + journal what changed.

Gentle reminder: Aura-work is for self-awareness and support, not diagnosis. Pair what you see with how you feel (warmth, tingles, calm, pressure)—many “see” with their sensitivity first.
